About the Engineering & Maintenance department

The Engineering department keeps the hotel running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is one of the most technically demanding departments in hospitality and one of the least visible to guests — but without it nothing works. Hotel engineers maintain all mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems across the property. Career progression is built on technical certifications, hands-on experience across multiple systems and the ability to manage both a technical team and a preventive maintenance programme. Engineering managers are among the highest paid department heads at senior levels in Thai hotels.

Your starting point. You are responding to maintenance requests across the property, carrying out basic repairs and preventive maintenance tasks. Focus on learning the property's systems, understanding safety procedures and developing your technical skills across electrical, plumbing and mechanical areas.

Your first leadership role. You are supervising a team of technicians, prioritising and assigning maintenance work orders, overseeing the preventive maintenance schedule and ensuring all work meets safety and brand standards. Specialist technical knowledge in at least one area — electrical, HVAC or plumbing — is expected at this level.

💡 Tips to move up faster in Engineering

  • Get certified in HVAC systems — it is the most in-demand technical skill in Thai hotel engineering and significantly increases your value
  • Develop your English for technical communication — Chief Engineers at international properties need to communicate with foreign contractors, GM and ownership
  • Learn energy management — hotels are under increasing pressure to reduce energy costs and engineers who understand energy efficiency are highly valued
  • Volunteer for capital project work — involvement in renovations and new installations gives you experience that routine maintenance never provides
  • Build strong relationships with other department heads — the Chief Engineer who is trusted by the GM, FOM and Executive Chef has far more influence and security
  • Understand the budget process — engineers who can prepare and justify a maintenance budget and capex plan are ready for Chief Engineer level

✕ Common mistakes that hold Engineering staff back

  • Staying purely reactive — technicians who only fix things when they break never develop the preventive maintenance mindset needed for supervisor level
  • Neglecting documentation — work orders, maintenance logs and compliance records are essential at management level and poor documentation habits are hard to break
  • Not developing cross-system knowledge — specialists in only one area plateau at supervisor level; Assistant Chief Engineers need broad knowledge across electrical, mechanical, plumbing and HVAC
  • Poor communication with other departments — engineering exists to support the hotel operation and engineers who are difficult to work with damage their own careers regardless of technical skill
  • Ignoring energy and sustainability — this is increasingly important to hotel ownership and GMs, and engineers who understand it are significantly more promotable
